1. Home FMT: Some people perform FMT at home after acquiring the necessary equipment, using stool from a carefully screened donor sourced from their local community.
2. Prescription and clinical FMT: There are FMT capsule and enema products licensed as drugs in the United States, for the purpose of preventing recurrent C. diff infections. There are other clinics and hospitals who prepare FMT products in-house for that purpose, which is approved under FDA guidelines as well. FMT products licensed as drugs can be used off-label for other conditions as well, although they are not covered by insurance for other purposes, and their cash prices are very expensive.
3. International FMT: FMT is regulated differently in some other countries, and there are quality clinics we sometimes refer to for that purpose
4. Clinical trials: There are hundreds of clinical trials studying FMT for a variety of conditions - if your condition is being studied in a trial that is actively enrolling, you could participate!

Yes. As part of our educational visits, we can guide you on how to properly screen a donor and prepare for home FMT safely.

That depends on your condition, your symptoms, and your microbiome. We’ll discuss whether FMT could be indicated for you. There are no guarantees that you will benefit from FMT.

While not exhaustive, this list includes some of the most commonly studied conditions:

• C difficile (C. diff) infections.  FMT is highly effective and FDA-approved primarily for treating recurrent C. difficile colitis, often after antibiotic treatment failure.¹
• Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)²
• Neurologic conditions such as multiple sclerosis (MS)^3–6, Parkinson’s disease⁷, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS^8,9), and autism^10,11.
• Metabolic disorders, including:
• Type 1 diabetes^12,13
• Type 2 diabetes (T2DM)^14,15
• Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)¹⁶

When performed with a properly screened donor and safe preparation practices, FMT is considered very safe.

• Mild abdominal discomfort is the most common side effect.
• As many as 2-5% of people with IBD may experience a flare after FMT.¹⁷
• Most side effects are self-limited and improve within one week.
